WHAT IS MATERIAL CITIZENSHIP
What is Material Citizenship™

Material Citizenship™ is a new approach to dementia care. It featured in the national press and can be found on the Alzheimer's Society website. The concept was developed during an Alzheimer's Society funded doctoral study and later designed as training programme for care home staff.

Material Citizenship™ focuses on everyday objects as a way of ensuring people with dementia live their lives their way. The often overlooked mundane objects that support a person's identity and enable them to maintain their identity by continuing everyday routines for as long as possible.

Material Citizenship™ has been shown to inspire and increase confidence in staff and reduce some behaviours others find challenging, also reducing medical interventions. It enhances the care experience for all.
